Philip Sugai

You can call me Philip :)

Philip Sugai is Professor of Marketing at Doshisha University’s Graduate School of Business and Director of the Value Research Center in Kyoto. His life’s work centers on redefining how value is understood, measured, and created in business and society. Drawing from Japan’s long tradition of ethical business philosophy, which emphasizes responsibility not only to customers but also to employees, communities, and nature, Philip has built a global perspective on how organizations can balance prosperity with wellbeing.

As co-founder of Valuufy Inc. and architect of Valuism, Philip has dedicated more than two decades to creating systems that make all forms of stakeholder value visible, measurable, and optimizable. His research demonstrates that true wellbeing arises when organizations move beyond profit-only metrics toward holistic measures that account for the flourishing of customers, employees, shareholders, partners, society, and the environment. This framework has guided his research and consulting with organizations including some of the world’s largest companies both in Japan and globally, supporting their transitions toward stakeholder-centered business models that enhance sustainable value creation.

Philip’s academic contributions include Building Value through Marketing (Routledge, 2021) and The Six Immutable Laws of Mobile Business (Wiley, 2009), along with numerous journal articles and international presentations. He has spoken at prestigious venues including the UN General Assembly Science Summit and has served as a visiting professor at Stanford University,  EHL Lausanne and Osaka University. His mission is to advance Valuism as a practical pathway for organizations worldwide, where success is defined not by narrow profit but by the wellbeing and prosperity of all stakeholders in our interconnected global economy.
